11 Simple Ways to Save Money in the Bathroom

You know those graphics that say “____is always a good idea?”  Usually the blank is filled in with something like ‘champagne,’ or ‘Paris.’  While none of us are arguing that champagne and Paris are usually pretty good ideas, we actually have some other words to fill in that blank with:  Saving money is always a good idea.

They are plenty of ways to save money throughout your home, but for the purposes of this post, we are going to take a look at saving energy and money in the bathroom.

11 Ways to Save Money in the Bathroom

1. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth

This is a simple act that many of us forget to do.  According to the EPA turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save up to 8 gallons of water per day.

2. Take shorter showers

Make an effort to cut back on those long relaxing showers with some of these tips.

3. Try an old fashioned navy shower

These showers consist of turning off the water during the time you lather up your hair or body, and then turning the water back on to rinse.  Are you up for the challenge?

4. Invest in a low flow shower head

This inexpensive investment can end up saving you a lot of water–and a lot of cash.

5. Invest in a low flow toilet

These toilets use much less water per flush than a traditional toilet does, meaning that for every flush, you are saving money.

6. Fix all leaks right away

Even a seemingly small leak can still have devastating effects on your water bill.  You can use this drip calculator from the American Waterworks Association to find out how much water and money you are actually losing.

7. Turn on the bathroom fan

The humidity and moisture from baths and showers make that bathroom heat right up, which means that your a/c needs to work harder to cool it down.  Use the fan to help get rid of some of that humidity in order to help out your air conditioner.

8. Turn down the water heater

Most of the time hot water heaters are set at the manufacturer’s recommendation of 140 degrees F.  However, we don’t really need water that hot.  You can turn down the water heater thermostat to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

9. Save shower water

A lot of water is wasted during the showering process–especially before you even get in the shower while you wait for the water to reach that perfect temperature.  Place a bucket in the shower to catch that water, and then use it to water your plants.

10. Buy toilet paper in bulk

We know that really cheap toilet paper is not always the ideal option.  But you can still save money on TP and be comfortable by purchasing it in bulk from big wholesale stores.

11. Put a water bottle in your toilet tank

Fill up a water bottle with water and place it in your toilet tank.  This will trick the tank into thinking that it is filled with more water than it actually is, which means less water will be used when the toilet is flushed.  This is a great option for those who don’t want to or can’t make the leap to a brand new low flow toilet.
