5 Reasons Temperatures are Fluctuating throughout your Home
In our home we deal with a problem that is probably all to familiar to many of you–the temperatures fluctuate depending on which room we are in. During the summer months, in order for our second floor to feel moderately comfortable, we need to be close to shivering on the first floor. As with all things, the best way to find a solution is to pinpoint the problem. So, why are the temperatures all over the place in your home?
5 Reasons Temperatures are Fluctuating throughout your Home
1. Thermostat location
Most home thermostats are located on the first floor of the house, which means it is only collecting air temperature data from the spot that it is in. The thermostat does not realize that while the first floor may have reached the desired temperature, the second floor, or other areas of the home have not.
2. Heat rises
It is common knowledge that warm air rises, which means a second floor or attic space will naturally be much harder to keep cool.
3. Blocked air vents
If the air vents are closed or blocked off that can seriously impact the temperature of a room–and cause your furnace or air conditioner to run less efficiently. If you find that you are having problems with temperature inconsistencies in individual rooms check to make sure that the supply and return vents are open and that they are not being blocked by any furniture.
4. The Wrong Size HVAC System
A good HVAC contractor will help you to install an HVAC system that is sized for your home based on its size and your family’s needs. When the system is too small, it simply cannot supply your home with enough cool or warm air.
5. Any type of openings
Old drafty windows, an open chimney flue, or even an outside door that is often being used will contribute to temperature fluctuations. Sealing windows, adding insulation, and being vigilant about the door staying shut are all good ways to help regulate temperatures throughout the home.
How to Fix the Problem
We’ve discussed some simple solutions when temperatures are fluctuating, such as adding insulation and making sure your vents are clear. Another great option is installing a zoned heating and cooling system within your home. As its name suggests a zoned system divides your home into different zones with a thermostat control for each–allowing you to control the temperature of each zone individually. Installing a zoned system does not require installing an additional HVAC system. Learn more about it in this blog post.
